Simple Steps Save Lives

May is National Water Safety Month

Here at SwimmingPool.com, we want you to be able to get the best information on products, maintenance tips, games, recipes and how to find a pool professional. But some of the most important information that we want to provide for you is how to stay safe in your swimming pool and spa.

There are many aspects of swimming pool safety and in the coming weeks we will cover several of them. But the following information is an overview of the basics that you should always remember when around water.

  • Never swim alone. No matter what your age, you should always have another person around when someone is in the swimming pool.

  • Always be aware of the depth of the water you are swimming in. You don’t want it to be too deep where you can’t recover if you get tired nor do you want it to be too shallow if diving in.

  • Never run around a pool area. Decks tend to hold water and can become very slippery.

  • When children are present and the pool is not in use, ALWAYS have a barrier between children and the water. This is also a good safety rule for pets.

  • Never swim during a storm.

  • Be aware of where the suction drains are in the pool. Keep long hair away from the suction fitting drain cover.

  • Be safe when handling and storing chemicals. Always keep them out of reach of children.

  • Be aware of sun exposure when swimming. Always use sunscreen and reapply often according to package directions.
